BUILDING HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
Healthy relationships allow you to express your individuality and bring out the best in both of you, and encourage growth. If you started a new relationship, it’s best to set a foundation for a positive and healthy relationship from the start. By setting your attention on respect and helpful communication, you can enjoy a healthy and satisfying relationship.
One of the foundations of healthy relationships is communication. Relationships require clear and open communication about everything. A common mistake is that one expect a partner “to know what I want”, or “to figure it out”. Partners do not have the capability to read your mind, if you have a need or want to express something, you need to communicate it yourself. It’s not fair to you or your partner when you don’t communicate your needs. Likewise, don’t hold in the things that bother you. If something is bothering you, say something to your partner, the earlier the better.
- If you don’t know how to start a conversation, say, “There’s something on my mind and I’d like it if you listened.” You can also say, “Something is bothering me and I feel like we should talk about it.”
